Oratorical Contest

The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students.

Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.


Rules

  • Each sponsored high school and home school may advance 1 contestant to the district competition. Must be certified by the sponsoring post.
  • National rules apply. Posts and district are not allowed to modify rules for any reason
  • Post contests must begin after October 29, 2022 and must end no later than December 2, 2022. 

Competition dates/location:

  • 20th District: January 14, 2023 at 9AM at Post 2 (time may be altered depending on number of contestants)
  • 3rd Division: No date has yet been published. I'm estimating it to be January 28, 2023 for my internal planning purposes. Location: probably back at Blinn College in Brenham, TX.
  • Department: February 20, 2023. Location: Near Dallas, TX

Scholarship Information (for winners at each level unless otherwise noted)

  • 20th District: $200
  • 3rd Division: $500
  • Department: Champion wins $2,000, 2nd Place wins $1,500, 3rd wins $1,000, and 4th wins $500
  • National: Various, depending on performance. National winner earns $25,000.
